Wandsworth firefighters have been giving new university students lessons in fire safety.
Green Watch from Wandsworth took two fire engines to Whiteland’s College, Roehampton University on Friday (19th September) and gave around 160 students about to start the new academic year a presentation on how to protect themselves from the dangers of fire
The students were advised about the importance of making themselves aware of the evacuation procedure in their halls of residence; adhering to no smoking regulations, using candles safely and the life-saving effects of fire doors on campus.
Firefighters also gave students a hot fat fire demonstration to show the potential dangers involved with cooking and how to avoid them.
Second years living off-campus in rented housing were told about the importance of fitting a smoke alarm and checking it regularly. They were also encouraged to sign up for a free home fire safety visit by their local fire crew. During a home fire safety visit firefighters give information on how to prevent fire and how to escape if one breaks out in the home. They will also fit free smoke alarms where they are needed.
Watch Manager Winston Douglas from Wandsworth Fire Station who arranged the university visit said: “For many of these young people this will be their first time living away from home and they will be faced with many new responsibilities.
“One of these is to make sure that they protect themselves and each other from the dangers of fire. Being able to speak to students as they start this exciting new chapter in their lives gives the Brigade an opportunity to get across some important fire safety messages that will ensure they enjoy their time at university safely and which could ultimately save their lives.”
