Fire dispute averted as Authority agrees new pay proposals

18 September 2008

The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority has agreed a groundbreaking new reward system for a key group of London Fire Brigade staff, averting a dispute over future pay for 450 of its operational managers.

Negotiations on a new pay structure for the staff concerned started earlier this year when a national agreement on pay protection following the 2002/3 firefighters’ strike came to an end. The new pay system is the first of its kind in the British fire service and the operational managers who will be moved from a fixed salary to being paid in future on the basis of their performance. The staff will now be able to progress through a salary range but only if their performance can justify it. High-performing staff will have the opportunity to earn more than they currently can under national pay arrangements.

The scheme was agreed by the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) at its meeting on 18 September and paves the way for performance-related pay across the fire service.

Chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority Councillor Brian Coleman, AM FRSA, said: “This is a major step forward by the Authority in introducing pay flexibility and matching reward to individual performance and contribution. It has the potential to transform the way the Authority rewards its staff in the future and sets an example to fire authorities on what can be achieved when they are left to negotiate locally."
