Firefighters pushed to limit in fitness challenge

17 September 2008

London’s Fittest Firefighter competition proved a big hit with spectators this year, drawing crowds of up to 1,000 people to Covent Garden.

Three separate contests – all demonstrating the level of fitness and dexterity required by modern firefighters - saw 24 men, four women and eight teams pitting their speed, strength and skill against each other in the West Piazza.

In the men’s category Crew Manager Lee Phillips from Wandsworth Fire Station took the honours, while in the women’s section, Firefighter Kay Broom from Bethnal Green emerged triumphant. In the team competition Southall were victorious, beating Soho into second place.

Racing two at a time against the clock, firefighters had to complete a series of gym tests, including rowing and bench presses, before donning full fire gear and tackling the rest of a 14 stage ‘fire ground’ assault course designed to push them to the limit.

In a competition running alongside the main event the ‘London Life Challenge’ saw young people from the Brigade’s LIFE programme compete in their own fitness challenge.
