London Fire Brigade (LFB) has won a prestigious Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for its commitment to health and safety.
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2008 aim to reduce the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work, and recognise organisations that have good health and safety management systems in place.
Winning a RoSPA award demonstrates an organisation’s dedication to the achievement of high levels of performance in health and safety.
Gary Dobson, Director of Operational Policy and Training for the London Fire Brigade, said: “It’s very gratifying that our work to improve the health and safety of all our employees has been recognised in this very significant way.
“The accident rate for the London Fire Brigade is comparatively low and safety will always be a priority for us. We will continue to work with our staff to find innovative ways to ensure everyone knows how to work safely.”
David Rawlins, RoSPA Awards Manager, said: “London Fire Brigade has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. We hope other businesses and organisations will follow its lead and strive for continuous improvement in health and safety management.”
Last year the Brigade launched a safety poster campaign for Firefighters using retro images, entitled ‘Declare Victory Over Accidents’.
Featuring six posters with a wartime theme to convey safety messages targeted at Firefighters, the campaign aimed to ensure health and safety was always a priority at fire stations. This campaign won two prestigious awards, the most recent of which was the employee engagement category in the Recruitment Advertising Awards.
The RoSPA awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, National Exhibition Centre, on Tuesday, May 13 2008.
