The Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act (“the Act”) was originally introduced to reform firefighting provision in London with the establishment of a professional fire brigade and provision for funding. Under sections 13-16 of the Act insurers are required to send annually a return to LFEPA detailing the gross amounts insured by them, except by way of reassurance, in respect of property in Greater London (other than the outer London Boroughs) which is insured against fire. A payment is made by insurers to LFEPA at a rate of £35 per £1m of gross amounts insured. Please use the links on the right to view the Act in full or for more information on our history.
LFEPA writes to insurers in March of each year to request returns for the year ended the previous December. These returns are due to be returned to LFEPA the following June. The letter includes a summary of the postcode districts to which the Act applies, although a more detailed list can be requested by e-mail (see below).
A guide to the Act is provided by LFEPA and is available to download under Related Documents below. This is intended to provide information and guidance relating to the Act and may be used by insurers to assist in the fulfilment of their statutory duties required by the Act. The guide contains details of annual return deadlines, payment dates and worked examples of how to calculate the gross amounts insured across a range of insurance policies.
