Valerie Shawcross has been a member of the Greater London Assembly since its inception in 2000 and was Chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority from 2000 until June 2008. First elected as a Croydon councillor in 1994, she was Leader of Croydon Council from 1997 until 2000. She was awarded the CBE in 2002.
