Councillor Coleman has served on Barnet Council since 1998 where he is the Cabinet Member for Environment and Operations and was Mayor of the Borough in 2009/10. He has represented Barnet and Camden on the Greater London Assembly since its inception in 2000 and was Chairman of the Assembly in 2004/5 and 2006/7.

He was appointed to the newly-created London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority in 2000 and has been Leader of the Conservative Group on the Authority since then. He was Deputy Chair of the Authority from 2000-2004, Vice-Chair of the Authority from 2005-2008 and was appointed Chairman of the Authority in June 2008.
