Fire in block of flats in Stepney

10 July 2012

Six fire engines and around 30 firefighters were called to a fire in a four storey block of flats on James Voller Way in Stepney, E1.

Around 15 people escaped the fire before the Brigade arrived.

Part of the external cladding of the building from the ground to fourth floor was damaged by the fire.  There was smoke affecting all four floors of the building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried out a search of the building and do not believe anyone has been injured.

The Brigade was called at 1618 and the fire was under control by 1929.

Firefighters from Whitechapel, Old Kent Road, Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
