Kingston - boat fire

07 December 2017

Three fire engines and two fire rescue units were called to a boat alight on the River Thames close to the High Street in Kingston-upon-Thames last night.

The Caribbean cruiser was completely destroyed by the fire. A cordon was put in place as there were cylinders involved.

Eight people were evacuated from nearby residential flats as a precaution. Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries.

Watch Manager Dave Bogaerts who was at the scene, said: “We had a very well developed fire which was extremely visible from the High Street in Kingston. The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took around 12 calls to the blaze. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire.

“There were propane cylinders involved so a hazard zone was set up as cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.”

The Brigade was called at 2346 and the fire was under control at 0103. Fire crews from Surbiton and Kingston fire stations and fire rescue units from Heston and Croydon attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
