Fire in an office block in The City

31 August 2013

Firefighters tackled a fire in an office building on Mark Lane in The City this afternoon. The office building was empty when crews arrived and no one was hurt.

Station Manager Matt Burrows, who was at the scene, said:

"We were called to reports of smoke coming from the roof of the building and we went in to investigate where it was coming from. Crews located the fire and put it out. Firefighters also carried out salvage work to save some of the property from within the building."

Ten fire engines went to the scene from Brixton, Soho, Clerkenwell, Dowgate, Dockhead, Shoreditch, Shadwell, Homerton, Whitechapel, and Southwark fire stations. 72 firefighters and officers worked to extinguish the blaze.

The Brigade was called at 1749 and it was declared was under control at 2006.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
