Fire crews were called to a fire at the old RAC Sports ground on Footscray Road in New Eltham yesterday afternoon. The Brigade was called at 1458. On arrival, the firefighters found a large stack of felled trees alight. One fire engine from Eltham and another from Sidcup fire station attended the incident.
Watch Manager Nathan Hobson, from Eltham fire station said: “Some local builders from Barkemp Construction were working nearby and kindly helped us out. They offered the use of their JCB digger to help us move the timber so we could make sure the fire was completely out. With their help we were able to tackle the fire sooner than anticipated and were very grateful for their assistance.”
An area of around 30 square metres of felled trees and undergrowth was damaged by the fire, which was brought under control at 1640.
