Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Ely Road, Croydon last night.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the ground floor flat but he later died in hospital. A small part of the flat was damaged by the fire.
The Brigade was called at 2334 and the fire was under control by 0004 hours. Fire crews from Croydon and Norbury attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
