Hayes residents evacuated after garage blaze

20 April 2012

Firefighters were called out last night after a blaze destroyed a garage on Dorchester Way in Hayes, UB4. An acetylene gas cylinder and an oxygen cylinder were found by firefighters inside the garage. As gas cylinders can explode when exposed to heat, a temporary safety zone of 200 metres was set up and forty five people from nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters tackled the blaze, ensuring that it did not spread to nearby properties, and also cooled the cylinders down in order to make them safe.

The Brigade was called at 2340 and the fire was under control by 0310. Two fire engines and ten firefighters from Southall fire station attended the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

More information on acetylene gas cylinders can be found on the Brigade’s website.
