Pregnant woman and two others rescued from flat fire in Walthamstow

20 August 2014

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled a fire in a flat in Pembar Avenue, Walthamstow, early this morning.

Firefighters led one woman to safety from the back garden and  rescued a man and a pregnant woman from the first floor flat.

The building (a house converted into two flats) was completely filled with smoke.

Watch Manager Charlotte Fitzgerald said:

“We worked quickly to rescue the three people.  There were no smoke alarms in the property so the residents had a lucky escape.  Working smoke alarms are essential because they provide vital early warnings and allow extra time to escape if there is a fire in your home.”

The three people were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance.

Fourteen firefighters and officers from Walthamstow and Leytonstone fire stations attended the fire. The Brigade was called at 0404 and the fire was under control by 0444.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
