Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to a fire in a five storey house with a basement on Harley Street, yesterday morning.
Around one quarter of the basement was damaged by fire as a result of two gas mains rupturing in the basement area. Around 200 people were evacuated from the surrounding buildings as a precaution.
The Brigade was called at 1016 and the fire was under control by 1341. Crews from Soho, Paddington and Islington fire stations were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
