Lambeth – e-cigarette explodes after charged with wrong adapter

14 October 2014

Firefighters tackled a fire in a caretaker’s office at a primary school on Wyvil Road in Lambeth yesterday. The Brigade’s fire investigators believe the fire was caused by an e-cigarette which was being charged through a USB port with the wrong adapter.

Around 320 staff and students evacuated the building and fortunately no-one was injured, but this highlights the dangers of using incorrect chargers which can over-charge products.

London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“It’s extremely important the correct type of charger is used with e-cigarettes and other electrical products to prevent fires from starting, and never leave items like e-cigs on charge overnight while you’re sleeping.”

The Brigade was called at 0946.
