09 May 2012

Firefighters rescued a woman from a burning flat in Pott Street, Bethnal Green, during the early hours of this morning.

The fire left the four roomed  flat gutted and crews used a ladder to rescue the woman from a first floor window. She was suffering from burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service. A man managed to escape the flat before the Brigade arrived and he was also  taken to hospital suffering from cuts, burns and smoke inhalation. A further 30 people left the five storey building before the Brigade got to the scene.

Watch Manager Richard Field from Bethnal Green Fire Station said: “The fire was already well developed when we got there but our crews worked really hard to bring it under control and managed to contain the fire to the flat it started in.”

The Brigade was called at 0402 and the fire was under control by 0508. Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel and Shoreditch fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
