Firefighters tackled a fire in a church on King Edwards Road in Barking on Saturday night. The blaze damaged a large part of the ground floor of the church but no one was hurt.
Station Manager Laurie Kenny, who was at the scene, said:
"Crews worked hard to bring the fire under control quickly. The building was full of very heavy smoke and firefighters searched the building thoroughly to make sure no one was inside."
Eight fire engines from Barking, Dagenham, Ilford, East Ham, and Plaistow fire stations went to the scene with 58 firefighters and officers.
The Brigade was called at 2109 and the fire was under control at 2311.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
