11 March 2010

Firefighters were called to a blaze involving a range of buildings including a bar/restaurant and offices, on Tabernacle Street in Shoreditch this morning. The fire severely damaged the third floor and roof. Half of the ground, first and second floors were also damaged by the fire.

At the height of the incident there were 20 fire engines and around 100 firefighters at the scene. Fire crews will remain at the incident for rest of the day.

The Brigade was called at 0432 and the fire was under control by 1120. Firefighters from Shoreditch and other surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

London Fire Commissioner, Ron Dobson said, "This was a complicated fire spreading rapidly through different premises and onto a bituemin covered roof, creating huge plumes of smoke across the city and presenting very difficult firefighting conditions for the crews attending. This incident yet again highlights the need for our fire safety work to prevent the fire risk and disruption these incidents have on our capital.”
