Wok were you thinking?

Firefighters are urging people to never pour water over hot oil after a woman poured water on a flaming wok in an incident on Nightingale Avenue in Harrow.

It is believed that the wok, which contained hot oil, was left unattended on the stove and caught fire. When the woman discovered the fire, she picked it up, took it to the sink, and poured water on it, which made the fire more severe. The woman then put a duvet over the wok to smother the flames, which caught alight and spread the fire even more.

Never, ever pour water on to a fat fire. To stay safe from fire while cooking read our kitchen fire safety top tips.
