London Fire Brigade

Emergency planning

Making sure London is prepared for a major incident or emergency is a priority for London Fire Brigade (LFB).

We work in partnership with the emergency services, the London boroughs and other emergency response organisations to develop plans that will ensure a coordinated response in the event of an emergency.

Partnership working is vital because the actions of one organisation in an emergency could impact on all of the other organisations involved. Our Emergency Planning team supports multi-agency partnership working within London.

Our emergency planning officers work closely with:

  • The London Resilience Team – established in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the team has a permanent staff supported by specialists from partner organisations including the emergency services, local authorities, the voluntary sector and central government departments. Together they provide the range of expertise required to ensure that London is prepared for emergencies.
  • London Emergency Services Liaison Panel (LESLP) – chaired by the Metropolitan Police Service, this group is made up of all of the emergency services and local authorities to help plan for major incidents in London.

Our emergency planning team leads on the arrangements for London Local Authority Gold (LLAG). LLAG is the term for one local authority chief executive who manages the response by all 33 London local authorities to a regional emergency.  They do this alongside senior representatives from the emergency services and other organisations.  Our emergency planning officers provide 24 hour support for LLAG arrangements, including provision of a regional local authority coordination centre and delivery of an annual training and exercise programme.

We are also responsible for leading on multi-agency plans to respond to accidents at major industrial sites within London.  We make sure that plans are written to deal with incidents at these locations, we hold public consultations and run exercises to test the plans.
