London Fire Brigade

Community safety campaign

Our Keep Your Community Safe & Sound campaign encourages all Londoners to become fire safety champions by making sure that they, their families and neighbours are safe from fire.

Last September we held our first ever Fire Safety Week which highlighted the work we do to get our fire safety messages across to Londoners. It was a huge success with nearly 10,000 people visiting one of our ten fire station open days across London. The week continued with our Schools Team promoting the campaign in schools across the capital and other events which focused on our work with disabled people, those with mobility problems and Londoners with alcohol and drug dependencies.

To help spread our key fire safety messages, a series of short films called the Firefighter’s Diary are being released on YouTube over the next five months.

To tell you more about how you can be a ‘fire safety champion’ we have posted a fire safety film on YouTube, 'Be a fire safety champion'.

A Facebook group has also been set up which is regularly updated with fire safety messages. You can find it by following the link below and invite your friends and anyone who would benefit from this information to join.

Safe and sound advice

Some of the specific messages we want people to remember are:

  • Fit smoke alarms on each level in your home and test them once a week.
  • Take special care when you are tired or when you've been drinking.
  • Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly. Never smoke in bed.
  • Keep matches and lighters where children cannot see or reach them.
  • Never leave lit candles in rooms that are unoccupied and make sure they are in secure holders on a surface that doesn’t burn.
  • Take extra care when cooking with hot oil.
  • Make an escape plan so that everyone in your home knows how to get out if there is a fire.
  • Take time every now and then to check on your family and neighbours to make sure that they are safe from fire. Help the fire brigade to spread the message.
