Advice for the carers of older people

Unfortunately the majority of fire deaths in the home involve older people. Many older people live alone and have reduced mobility, which makes it harder to escape from a fire.

Tips for caring for older people

• Visit the other areas of this website, explaining how you can make the home of the person you're caring for safe.
• Visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau or branch of Age UK to find out about local voluntary groups that can also help.
• Make an escape plan, think about how to escape and make sure the way out isn’t blocked.
• If the person you care for lives in sheltered accommodation or a residential home, ask their landlord or warden to explain the safety plans for the premises so they're sure of the nearest route to safety.
