General safety advice

As the temperature drops, you’re probably turning on electrical equipment like heaters or blankets, cooking more hot food or lighting candles, but all can start fires.

The vast majority of fires can be avoided by following these tips:

  • Keep clothing or other objects away from electric heaters or fires
  • Make sure if  using candles they are used with caution and never left unattended
  • Unless they are designed to be left on, always turn off electric blankets before getting into bed, and make sure your blanket is serviced regularly
  • Ensure all electrical appliances are in safe working order, replacing frayed cords and broken plugs and keeping appliances free from dust
  • Many fire deaths involve people over 60, who may live alone or have mobility problems. If you have older friends or relatives pay them a visit and make sure their homes are safe from fire.

Don’t forget – a smoke alarm can buy you valuable seconds to escape if a fire starts. Every home should have at least one alarm, checked every week to ensure it’s working.
